The Pentlands

The Pentland hills sit just outside of Edinburgh and ranges for around 20 miles in length. There are 14 named hills and 9 reservoirs in total, offering an expansive area to be explored.

Accessible by bus from the city centre, it is the perfect place to incorporate outdoor activities into your holiday in Edinburgh or your day-to-day life.

The land in the Pentlands is publicly-owned land (such as Hillend, Bonaly, and Harlaw), as well as privately owned land used for farming and sports shooting.

The Regional Park covers an area of 10,000 hectares, with over 100km (62 miles) of waymarked paths. Approximately 600,000 people use in the park every year, with walking, cycling, horse riding and fishing just a few of the recreational activities.

There are a number of projects across the Pentlands that aim to preserve the nature, animals and footpaths across the area.

We love to champion and support this work which is why Edinburgh Trail Running donate 10% of all profits to the Pentland Hills Regional Park.

Our routes

  • 9th August 2025

Our August weekender encompasses beautiful views covering the west and east side of the Pentlands, maximising your exploring time. It’s perfect for someone who has not long started trail running but has road running experience.

This day is roughly 10km with 500m elevation.

  • Sunday 10th August

Day 2 of our August weekender will cover roughly 14km with 200-300m elevation. Weather permitting, we will be stopping at a local cafe run by Loganlea fishery halfway round.

  • October's mini skyline

This 18km run explores the 5 rolling hills; West Kip, East Kip, Scald Law, Carnethy Hill and Turnhouse Hill. With an elevation gain of around 800 metres in total, it is challenging at times. From the top, you get amazing views across the whole Pentlands, over to Fife and of course, Edinburgh. Passing Glencourse, Harlaw and Threipmuir reservoir.
